¤  Correctly and safely set up multimedia equipment/programs in accordance with organization procedures. 

¤  Assist students to use multimedia equipment/programs safely and in accordance with organization procedures.

o   Healthy Use/Issues

¤  Provide ergonomic working arrangements at the computer stations to prevent injury.  Wrist and finger pain may occur and/or lower back, spine or neck pain from poor posture.

¤  Extended use of a computer or digital electronic devices may cause eye strain. Straining to see the screen in addition to exposure to the brightness of the computer monitor may cause blurred vision, headaches and other issues for the eyes.  Preventive recommendations by the Mayo Clinic

á      Take eye breaks every 15-30 minutes for one to three minutes

á      Blink often to refresh your eyes

á      Consider using artificial eye drops

á      Improve the air quality by using a humidifier, lowering the thermostat, and avoiding smoke

á      Practice relaxation exercises

á      Massage your eyelids and muscles over your brows, temple, and upper cheek once or twice daily

á      Get appropriate eyewear for computer work

o   Legal Use/Issues

¤  Consider the inclusion of a computer policy that covers acceptable

use guidelines as an addition to the multimedia website.

¤  Refer to the governing institutionŐs policy on technology and computer usage.

¤  Materials produced for multimedia instruction are at risk for theft, manipulation, and illegal copying.

o   Ethical Use/Issues

¤  Inform, discuss, and encourage students to think about theft, manipulation, and illegal copying of multimedia from an ethical standpoint.

¤  Adhere to the governing institutionŐs guidelines when infusing technology via multimedia into the respective nursing curriculum.

¤  Provide equal access to technology for all nursing students.

¤  Protect student privacy rights when using computers:

á      Remind students not to share their passwords with anyone, including the instructor

á      Advise students to log off when they have completed their multimedia assignment

á      Instruct students not to sign on or use a computer under anotherŐs name
